Mr. Walter “Wendell” McCann, 82 , of Mt. Airy passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.  He was born in Surry County on September 30, 1940, to the late Grover and Mary Hodges McCann.  Mr. McCann worked for Westinghouse for many years.  He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy Russell McCann; daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl Haynes, Beverly King and Gray; grandchildren, Tiffany Hiatt and Mark, Joe Jolley and Karen, Willie Parker; great grandchildren, Daisy Brown, and Finley Jolley; step great grandchildren, Gabe Adams, and Zach Adams; a sister and brother-in-law, Katherine Hodges and Roger; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clinton McCann and Mattie, Arthur Gray McCann, Curtis McCann and Joan; many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. McCann was preceded in death by a brother and sisters-in-law, Rev. Luther McCann and Naomi, and Gloria McCann.  A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 3, 2023, at 3:00 PM at New Life Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Brown officiating.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt.
