William Lee Young
William Lee Young, 67, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at his home. He was born on November 30, 1957, to the late Herman Lee Young and Nannie Ruth Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Melissa Young; and his brother, Truman Douglas Young.
William was a devoted member of Mountain View Baptist Church until his health began to decline. Known locally as DJ Willie D, he brought joy to many through his love of music, specializing in old-school R&B and Motown music. He was a popular and requested DJ at the Sportsman Club, the Black Pearl, and other local gatherings.
In addition to his passion for music, William was a gifted writer. His writings centered around Christian principles providing guidance and information to help the Christian believer. Though his works remain unpublished, his children have hopes to honor his legacy by publishing his writings posthumously. He also had a deep appreciation for movies, westerns, and Walker Texas Ranger. He was an exceptionally gifted cook, known for his signature steaks, chicken, pork chops and even desserts. William was often recognized by his stylish outfits, always paired with one of his signature hats, no matter where he was going. Above all, he cherished spending time with his children, whom he deeply loved and cared for.
William is survived by his two daughters, India Young and Cicely Young; his son, Isaiah Young; his grandchild, Benicio “Benny” Young, and an abundance of special grandchildren. He also leaves behind three sisters, Janice Akridge, Leatrice Prunty, and April Young; three brothers, Berkley Hairston, Sean Young, and Eric Hairston; as well as a host of other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Mountain View Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens.
