William Lewis Helms

August 7, 1945 - June 29, 2024

William “Bill” Helms passed away of heart failure at Roanoke Memorial on June 29, 2024 at the age of 78. Born to the late James “Billy” William Helms and Grace Woody Helms, Bill was a lifelong resident of Franklin County, graduating from FCHS in 1963.

Bill served honorably in the Army National Guard from 1964-1970. For decades he co-ran Helms Farmers Exchange with his beloved brother, Ramsey Ware Helms, until 1999. This Franklin County fixture allowed him to know just about everyone in town, and provided material for numerous stories that he loved to reminisce about with friends. In 2002 he began to serve the residents of the area by driving for the Franklin County Department of Aging. This too brought him great joy, and he was able to work until the week before his passing.

Bill’s true joy came from spending time with his family, at his home place working on his tractor, and engaging in heartfelt conversations with his numerous friends. He is known for his warm demeanor and his genuine care he showed to those around him. His influence and presence in Franklin County is deeply felt, and already profoundly missed.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Bonnie Smallwood Helms. Together they had their children, Jim and Lori, who fulfilled their union. He will be deeply missed by his favorite daughter in law, Jennifer Witt Helms, and favorite son in law, Josh Compton. He cherished his grandchildren, Teagan and her husband Justin Moore, Ryder and Kendall Compton, and Susanna and Jessica Helms. He was blessed to know and love the first of what is sure to be many great grandchildren, Hank. Bill leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community spirit. His friends and the people of Franklin County hold a special place in his heart, and the family sincerely thanks those of you who have supported him with your kindness and friendship over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to Pleasant Hill Church (90 Sherwood Lane, Rocky Mount, VA 24151) in Bill’s memory.

Visitation will be at Pleasant Hill Church on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 1 p.m. and a funeral service celebrating the remarkable life of a man who touched so many with his kindness and dedication immediately to follow at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
