Willie Burton Cyrus
Willie Burton Cyrus, 91, of Gladstone passed away on April 18, 2025 at Tate Springs Nursing Home. Willie was born in Campbell County on June 27, 1933 to the late Samuel Thurman Cyrus and Lizzy Mae Moore Cyrus. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mundy Cyrus, having 67 beautiful years of marriage. In addition to his parents, Willie was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, two nieces, and a nephew. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Willie was a member of Gladstone Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, was the treasurer, and served on many committees throughout his 72 years as a member. He proudly served in the National Guard during his high school years. Upon leaving Rustburg High School he entered the US Navy for a tour of duty during the Korean War. After serving four years in the Navy, he was employed by the C&O Railway Transportation Department / CXS Railway. He retired after 40 years of service with the railroad.
Willie served in numerous capacities in the community throughout his life. He was one of the organizers of the Gladstone Ruritan Club, serving on several committees. He was the coach for the Gladstone Boy’s Little League baseball team. He also worked with the Boy Scout Troop in Appomattox. Willie was a founding member of the Gladstone Rescue Squad serving for 40 years. He was instrumental in helping the Gladstone Fire Station built and the organizing of the Fire Department where he served on the Board of Directors. Willie was a member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge #73 in Amherst where he served various roles.
A memorial service will be held on May 3, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Driskill Funeral Chapel with a one hour prior visitation. Reverend Jeff Worley will be officiating. The family requests that those in attendance wear casual attire.
