Curtis Eugene Cannaday

October 7, 1948 - June 8, 2022

Curtis Eugene Cannaday was born on October 7, 1948, in his grandfather, James Hollandsworth’s house in Philpott, VA to Eugene M. and Doris Hollandsworth Cannaday.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his brother, Douglas Cannaday in 1982 and his first wife, Denise Lewis in 2020.
He is survived by, Karen Cannaday, his loving wife of 33 years; his children, Tammy Joyce (Michael), Wendy Hoff, Gloria Roberts (David Deskins), Stacey Young (Gary) and son, John Cannaday.
In 1968, while still attending High School, he went to work at Fieldcrest Mills.  In 1969, his future wife, Karen, came to work there.  They soon became fast friends and over the years, friendship turned to love and they were married August 19, 1989.
In 1977, distressed at the total absence of accessibility, he joined with a group of friends and the “All American Handicapped Association” WAS BORN.  It is now known as disAbilities Unlimited because it is their goal to take the “dis” out of disability.
In 1978, Curtis started attending Danville Community College.  He attended college full-time in the day and worked full time at the mill at night.  It was hard.  (His class started with 60 people and only 12 graduated).  In 1980, he graduated with an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Programming.  After 31 years at Fieldcrest, the Mill went out of business.  Curtis became a Big Rig Driver.  He delivered to all 48 states and Canada.
One year, Karen decided she wanted to ride along.  They did 43 states and drove 110 thousand miles in 8 months.  It was a trip of a lifetime.
After retirement, Curtis and Karen participated in activities at the Martinsville and Henry County Senior Center.  They went to the “Y” 3 days a week and exercised in the pool.  Curtis served disAbilities Unlimited in various capacities.  They also played a lot of Bingo.  They didn’t aways win, but they had a GREAT Time.
