Mildred Viola Gravely Brown

January 1, 1933 - June 23, 2022

Mildred Viola Gravely Brown affectionately known as “Tootnie” to her family and friends transitioned from this earthly life to her eternal Life on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at her home, at the age of 89. Born on January 1, 1933, In Henry County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Randolph and Maggie Hodge Gravely.

Mildred was united in marriage to the late Mr. Harold Cloteal Brown and they were blessed with six children. She attended the Henry County Schools and completed the eighth grade. She did domestic work in private homes for a while, worked at Hamco Pant Company and the Screen print Department at Tultex Corporation where she later retired in 1989. Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all, she loved cooking and preparing meals for her family as well as working with her flowers.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters; Mrs. Bertha G. Gravely, Mrs. Louise G. Dawkins, Mrs. Verna G. Martin, Miss Thelma Gravely, Miss Rachael Gravely, Mrs. Maggie Richardson and Mrs. Lois Hairston and four brothers; Mr. James C. Gravely, Mr. William C. Gravely, Mr. Clay L. Gravely, and Mr. Charlie M. Gravely.

Mildred began her official walk with God in 1969 when she joined the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Sam W. Adams. She loved the Lord and was a faithful and loyal member of the church, she served on the Usher Ministry, Ladies of Virtue Ministry, Intercessory Prayer Ministry, and Mother of the church. Mildred later made the transition to the Galilean House of Worship under the leadership of Michael Penn where she continued to work faithfully until her health declined.

She leaves to cherish her memory; one son, Harold Darnell Brown (Odarish), five daughters, Jeanette Jackson (Alonzo), Bertha Dillard, Carolene Ramos (Allen), Beverly Ann Brown, all of Martinsville, Virginia and Joy Ward (Steve) of Severn Maryland; one sister; Hildred Gravely of Martinsville, Virginia; six grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 11:30 AM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Bishop Michael Penn, officiating. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to service. A floating visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel.
