Eugene "Gene" Herman Meyer
Eugene Herman Meyer (Gene), 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Friday, August 5, 2022. Gene was born in the Nation of India, where his parents lived and his father was a missionary. Gene is predeceased by his parents, Rev. Herman Meyer and Irma Jordan Meyer; two brothers; a sister; also his wife, Lenore Craft Meyer. Gene is survived by his son, Donald Meyer.
Gene grew up in the USA, where he attended school, worked as a farm laborer, steel worker all in the state of Indiana. He graduated from St. John’s College and Valparaiso University in 1951. He earned a master’s degree from Indiana State University in school psychology, exceptional children, and speech pathology in 1953. He was a graduate student in speech pathology, audiology and psychology at Vanderbilt University from 1953 to 1954. In 1954 to 1956, he was speech and hearing consultant for the state of Tennessee. In 1956 to 2001, he was a school psychologist in Florida and Virginia. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Florida in educational psychology and counseling (1967).
He was a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) serving as president twice of the Roanoke Chapter of CEC.
Gene was a member of College Lutheran Church.
While at St. John’s College he served in the Kansas National Guard from 1947 to 1949.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022, 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
