Patrick "Pat" Maurice Minahan
Patrick “Pat” Maurice Minahan of Salem, Virginia died on August 28, 2022, at the age of 85. Pat was born on February 2, 1937, to the late John and Katherine Minahan in Roanoke, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings, Margaret Karnes (Dick), John Minahan (Edna), and Katherine Poole; as well as three aunts, Nellie, Anna, and Mary Minahan. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy Minahan; children, Joe Minahan (Mary), and Katherine Ferguson (Rutherfoord); grandchildren, Jack and Gracie Minahan and Thomas and Anna Ferguson; brother-in-law, Bob Poole; and many special nieces and nephews.
Pat attended Roanoke Catholic School; and was blessed with classmates who became lifelong friends, all gathering at his home as recently as the week before his death. He graduated from Roanoke College and retired from Harleysville Insurance Company. As a devout Irish Catholic, family and faith were the most important parts of Pat’s life. The youngest of four siblings, he was “Uncle Pat” to twelve nieces and nephews long before he had children of his own, and they brought him great joy throughout his life. As a father, he never missed an event for his children and was immensely proud as they built families of their own. Without a doubt, the role of grandfather was his favorite! He loved spending time with his four grandchildren, and they were the lights of his life.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Sylvia Priest, Shirley Forrest, and JoJo, who provided love and support to Pat and all of us during his final months. A special thanks to the staff of Carilion’s Palliative Care Unit whose compassion made his final days comfortable and peaceful.
A funeral mass will be held at 12 p.m. noon on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at St. Andrews Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Virginia.
