Otis Kelly Richardson, 88, of Pamplin, Va., passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Roselee “Rose” Shelton Richardson.

Born in Pamplin, Va., on January 29, 1935, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward Richardson and Carrie Goin Richardson. He was a member of Rocks Baptist Church.

Otis entered the United States Army in February 1957. He trained as a medic at Ft. Sam Houston in Houston, Texas. He was then transferred to the state of Washington, where he was later deployed to South Korea and stationed at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) for 18 months. Otis pulled guard duty 24 hours at a time and often pulled duty for others who were not able to stay awake. After being discharged from Korea, he was sent to Ft. Knox. While stationed there, he was responsible for driving Red Cross vehicles back and forth to the hospital. It took him only two days to become a certified driver. Otis was recognized for being an outstanding soldier by the General in command.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Ruby R. Almond and husband, Joseph of Pamplin; five nieces and nephews, Ronnie Richardson and wife, Debbie, Mike Richardson, Sabrina R. Savage, Jane A. Thomas and husband, Robbie, and Tim Almond and wife, Tina; numerous great nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law Virginia Shelton; and special friends, Ralph and Shirley Cheatham.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman H. Richardson and Lloyd E. Richardson.

A funeral service will be held 2 pm, Monday, September 18, 2023, at Rocks Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V. F. W. Post #9855 combined honor guard.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.
