Margaret Steppe Steele

Margaret “Grananny” Steppe Steele, 95, of Roseland, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Margaret spent her youth in Concord prior to her marriage to John Andrew Smith, Jr., and moving to Appomattox where she raised her children. She remarried following the death of her first husband to the late James “Pete” T. Steele after moving to Rustburg where she lived the majority of her later years.
Born in Campbell County, on July 31, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Dallas David Steppe and Eunice Marie McRoy Steppe. She was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church and retired from Courtland Manufacturing after 43 years of service.
She is survived by three children, Dianne Smith Cook (Tommy) of Appomattox, John Andrew Smith III (Sharon) of Roseland, and Doris Smith Pennington (Roy) of Rustburg; three grandchildren, Dwayne Cook, Terry Cook, and Brittany Pennington; stepchildren, Wanda Steele of Cary, NC, Mike Steele, Cheryl Steele, and Greg Steele (Janet) all of Rustburg; special friends, Sarah Courtney and Helen Nay; sisters-in-law, Sally S. Booth of Concord, Hazel Williamson, Elaine Steele, and Brenda Steele (William “Bro”) all of Rustburg; and two nieces and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Carlton Dale Smith and Everett Darius Smith; a stepson, J. T. Steele; a grandson, Jerry Cook; and siblings, Mildred Hill, Pauline Keith, James Steppe, Doris Patton, Dona Steppe and Robert Steppe.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2pm, March 1, 2025, at Robinson Funeral Home by Pastor Tim Dooley. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service and other times at Doris’ house.
