Elinor Cornelia Bent
Elinor Cornelia Bent, 91, of Salem, Va., passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019, at the Oaks Assisted Living.
Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University in the 1940s, she married her husband of 49 years, Roy Sumner Bent, Jr. Together, they moved to Boston and later to Atlanta before finally settling in Virginia in the late 50s. She was well known as a librarian in local public libraries for 30 years. Quilting was a favorite hobby. Her heritage from Brooklyn was always on her mind. She was a strong woman, and will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry August and Mary A. Brosnan Bell; husband of 49 years, Roy Sumner Bent, Jr.; and siblings, Barbara Mulvey and Harry Bell.
Her surviving family includes children, Matthew D. Bent and wife, Pamela, of Poolesville, Md. and Stephanie Ransom and husband, Bruce, of Vinton, Va.; grandchildren, Russell, Eric, Katie, Audrey, and Travis; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Gavin, Ben, Cam, and Adeline; and special friends, Sam and Liz Williams.

Family and friends may gather beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at the St. James Episcopal Church located at 4515 Delray Street in Roanoke. The funeral service will then begin at 11 a.m. with Rev. Susan Bentley officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
