Sherman Albert Wheeler

Sherman Albert Wheeler, 81, of Bedford County passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 3, 2019 after suffering a long battle with Dementia. Sherman was born December 24th, 1937 and raised in Shady Grove, VA to Albert Ross Wheeler and Gladys St. Clair Wheeler.
Together with Nelda Wheeler Ruff he had 4 children. Sherman Albert Wheeler Jr., Bobby Lee Wheeler, Susan Ann Wheeler and Timothy Ross Wheeler. In later years he spent 20 plus years as a devoted partner to Claudia Guthrie.
He worked for many years as an equipment operator for Brabham Petroleum. Everyone always said that no one could operate a backhoe like Sherman could. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and even at the end of his life he reminisced on his career. He also worked for Jackie and Troy Gray on special projects for many years. They knew they could call on Sherman for anything they needed done right the first time.
Sherman is proceeded in Death by his Father, Albert Ross Wheeler, Mother, Gladys. St. Clair Wheeler. His Sisters Ruby Wheeler Flowers. Daughter Susan Ann Wheeler, Son Sherman Albert Wheeler Jr. and partner Claudia Guthrie.
He is survived by his sisters, Della Wheeler Maddox (Charles), Mary Wheeler Hawks (Ray), Shirley Wheeler Carter (Grover). He is also survived by his sons Bobby Lee Wheeler, Timothy Ross Wheeler and his life partner Evan William Garst. Step children Kenneth Guthrie, Tina Fields and Donna Blevins. As well as many nieces and nephews and step grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Lotz Funeral Home in Vinton, VA on Friday April 5th from 2pm - 4pm and 6pm – 8pm. Memorial Services will be held at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 1861 Jordandtown Rd. Thaxton, VA on Saturday April 6th at 1pm followed by an Interment at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Roanoke Va.
