John Robert Powell

John Robert Powell, 79 of Montvale went to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 13, 2020. John was born in Bedford County on April 13, 1941 to the late Gilbert Richardson Powell and Goldie Karnes Powell. He was a devoted husband and father and spent much of his time with his family. He retired after thirty-eight years at Norfolk Western/Norfolk Southern Railroad and enjoyed going to work every day.

He was a lifelong member of Colonial Baptist Church where he served faithfully in Sunday School and worship. He loved working in his garden and yard and any chance to hunt, fish or play a round of golf. While at Bedford High School, he won the school's golf championship.

He is survived by his soul mate and loving wife of fifty-eight years, Barbara Mae Ross Powell. There were not many days that she wasn't by his side and was distraught when not allowed to visit. John is also survived by his son, Charles Everett Powell and wife, Lucy; his daughter, Penny Powell Arrington and husband, Mark. He was Papa to six grandchildren, Courtney Powell, Morgan Powell, Nicholas Powell, Ted Arrington, Luke Arrington, Hannah Arrington and Great Grandpa to Madilyn Leigh Arrington. Also surviving John is his brother, Elbert Powell and wife, Barbara and his sisters, Nancy Witt and Patsy Keller and her husband, Pepper.

A funeral service will be held at the graveside at 11AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor A. C. Holland officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials and thoughts may be shared with the family at www.updikefuneralhome.com
