William Dexter "Bill" Shumate III
William (Bill) D. Shumate III, 73, of Salem, went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.
Bill worked as an electrical engineer with Virginia Tech for 32 years. His favorite hobbies included hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his membership with Sherwood Archers of Roanoke and Triangle Archers of Christiansburg.
Preceding him in death were his parents, William D. Shumate II and Lorena M. Shumate; and his sister, Martha Chavez.
His surviving family includes his wife, Auvray Keith Kirk Shumate of Salem; children, Amanda (Mandy) Mayer Little and husband, Jonathan (Jake), of Albany, N.Y., David H. Shumate and wife, Danielle, of Riner, Dexter (Dee) A. Shumate and wife, Sheena, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Dani Kirk Roupe and husband, Scott, of Salem; grandchildren, Josh Mayer, Lucy Little, and Jacob and Delaney Roupe; one niece; and one nephew.
Special appreciation is extended to Drs. Andrew Fintel and John Rogers, the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, and Gentle Shepherd Hospice (love you Becky).
Family and friends will gather from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 6:30 p.m. with Bill Jones officiating. Please wear khakis, polo shirts, and anything fuchsia to this celebration of Bill’s life.
