Vernon Jacob Thrush

December 7, 1959 - January 4, 2021

Vernon Jacob Thrush, 61, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 4, 2021, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, in Charlottesville.
He was born on December 7, 1959, in Roanoke Virginia to Edith Gertrude Kirby Thrush and the late William Jacob Thrush. Vernon was a fun-loving man who was not afraid of hard work to provide for his family. He was always looking out for the needs of others before himself. He loved Dallas Cowboy football, NASCAR racing, and trips to the beach, but one of Vernon’s favorite pass times was having a cup of coffee out on the deck. On occasion, you may find him enjoying a ride on his Harley, but he will be remembered most as a loving husband, father, and friend to many.

In addition to his father, Vernon was preceded in death by his brother, Warren Douglas Thrush; and his father-in-law, Sammy Lee Brown.

Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife, Shannon Lee Thrush, having known one another for 35 years, together for 22, and married for 16; his children, Angela Thrush (Andrew), Chad Thrush, Candi Thrush (Matt), Tiffini Thrush (Carley), Brandon Thrush (Carrie); Grandchildren, Samantha Burr (Timmy), Christopher Duncan, Jacob Gardner, and Madison Gardner; great-grandchildren, Ashton and KayLee; mother, Edith Gertrude Thrush; siblings, Gaye Phillips, Cissy Gillespie, and Kenny Thrush; favorite “child”, Roscoe; mother-in-law, Sandra Lee Brown; and numerous nieces nephews and friends.

Funeral services to honor Vernon’s life will be conducted on Friday, January 8, 2021, at 11 am, in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son funeral home, in Salem, with Pastor Don Woodard officiating.
Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, also in Salem.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of University of Virginia Medical Center, for the care given to Vernon and the family, when it was most needed.

Flowers will be excepted, or donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
