Johnny V. "John" Shenal

November 29, 1945 - June 8, 2021

Johnny V. “John” Shenal, 75, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, from his home surrounded by his family.
John was born on November 29, 1945, in Martinsville, Va., son of the late John Vincent and Eunice Stone Shenal. Following his graduation from Martinsville High School, John continued his education from the University of Virginia, earning his bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was a proud Wahoo (although his kids chose to join the Hokie Nation).
Being the engineer he was, it is to no surprise that John was continually in thought. He could study a situation or problem for hours before presenting a resolution. John was a true provider for his family, making sure they had everything needed to succeed in life. His children were always reminded of how proud he was of them, and even into their adult lives, they could always depend on guidance and support from “Pops.”
John enjoyed trips to the beach with family and the numerous cruises he and Emily shared together, but his love for family was what he cherished most and will forever be etched in the hearts of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Those remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife of 50 years, Emily Ware Shenal, of Salem; son, Brian Shenal (Cathy), of Salem; daughter, Kelly Shenal Grigg (Brad), of Blacksburg; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Jonathan Shenal, and Bradley and Alexis “Lexi” Grigg; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 11, 2021, from 10 until 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, in Salem. Services honoring John’s life will start directly after at 11 a.m. at the church. A private interment will be conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Pastor’s discretionary fund at First United Methodist Church, 125 W. Main St., Salem, Va. 24153.
