Gary Lloyd Sherman

- August 1, 2019

Gary Lloyd Sherman, 76, of Roanoke went to be with the Lord on August 1, 2019. He was born in Washington D.C. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sherman and Helen Grooms; Grandmother, Dollie Van Wormer; Uncle, Jay W. Greene; and Sister, Dollie Sherman.

He had a love of life and a smile that could light up a room. His love for people was something special, that made everybody who came in contact with him, love him instantly. These attributes aided him through his long careers in Management and hospitality, from his work at Gallaudet Collage, Wells Fargo Armored Car, Shoney’s Restaurant, Save-X Mini-Mart, and finally at Dave’s Restaurant and Country Cookin’. He was always respected by his peers and superiors. His short time in the U.S. Navy displayed his love for Country. He was a brother to any person that came in contact with him. Gary was always able to uplift anyone with his unique spirit and kind heart. He loved his Family dearly and would always brag about the pride he had for his children. If you knew Gary, before the conversation was over, you would know about his children and life. He had many friends and close friends that would become his extended Family. His best friends, Doug and Carol, would stay by his side until the end.

The Family would also like to thank all the people who aided Dad till the end. Thank you to Roanoke Memorial Hospital staff, Carillion Hospice Care, Team Nurse, Friendship Manor, Berkshire Rehabilitation Center, and all the wonderful people that gave Dad the help he needed. Thank you to David and Seth who gave Dad words of comfort and spiritual inspiration. We want to especially thank the staff at Edinburgh Square; all of you were very dear to Dad’s heart.

Gary is survived by his children; Son, Timothy and Wife, Teresa Sherman, Daughter, Jennifer and Husband Michael Elliott; Grandchildren Michael, Sean, Ian, Camden and Carlie; and Great Grandchildren, Kimberly and Poppy. He is also survived by Peggy Hofler, Life Partner of his Sister, Dollie. The Family will receive friends on Thursday, August 8, 2019 from 5-7PM with service at 7PM at Simpson Funeral Home.
