Barry Ira Cantor
Barry Ira Cantor of Forest, VA, a beloved pastor, esteemed engineer, and compassionate soul, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the age of 78, after bravely battling Alzheimer's disease.
Born on October 18, 1947, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Bernard R. Cantor and Florence M. Cantor.
Throughout his life, Barry epitomized love and service, touching countless lives with his unwavering kindness and generosity. As a pastor of an inner-city church, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to guiding and supporting his congregation, offering solace and hope to those in need.
With a brilliant mind and a passion for learning, Barry earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, a testament to his intellect and dedication. He was a retired Electrical Engineer at BWXT. His technical expertise was matched only by his ingenuity and resourcefulness; he had a remarkable ability to build and repair anything, a skill he gladly shared with others.
An adventurer at heart, Barry found joy in the open road, embracing the freedom of motorcycle rides and the tranquility of cycling. He cherished the beauty of the world around him and made it a priority to stay active and healthy throughout his life.
Despite facing his own challenges, he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in distress. His selflessness and compassion knew no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Barry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Wanda W. Cantor; four children, Cheryl Brooks (Ronnie), Tina Painter (Brandon), Jonathan Benjamin Cantor (Sarah), Jessica Garner (Nelson); one sister, Adele Hanks (Thomas); fourteen grandchildren, Joshua Brooks (Chelsea), Anna Myers (Cameron), Logan Brooks (Logan), Isaac Cantor, Carter Brooks, Naomi Gorney (Gaven), Haley Brooks, Sallie Garner, Margaret Garner, Phoebe Cantor, Mason Painter, Mary Cantor, Addison Painter, Barrett Garner; and eight great-grandchildren, Cash, Lawson, Ruth, Luna, Junia, Edith, Raife, Tate; numerous nieces and nephews; and loved by many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Gather Lynchburg Church, 3135 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24501. Flowers can be delivered to Gather Lynchburg on Friday, May 1, 2026, before 4:00 PM. Bibles may also be donated via Gideons in lieu of flowers. https://bit.ly/acfseghk
