Barry Stephen Hill

August 6, 1957 - March 20, 2024

Barry Stephen Hill, 66, a lifelong resident of Salem, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Barry is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Mae Dowdy and paternal grandparents, Herman Hill, Sr. and Nancy Hill. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Katherine (Kathy) Hill, and his children, Shannon Hill (Mike Reidy) and Brandon Hill (Rebekah). Barry (a.k.a. “Paw Paw”) also leaves behind five grandchildren, Owen and Simon Reidy and Grey, Thatcher, and Emory Hill; parents, Herman, Jr. and Shelby Hill; as well as his siblings, Jeannie Cornett (Bob), and Keith Hill (Teresa).

Barry had a love of good food, talking on the phone, TV shows (oldies but goodies), NFL football, shopping at yard sales, beach vacations, classic rock, classic cars, and most of all, he loved spending time with his family. In his early days, he owned his own auto body shop and used car lot, was an all-around fix-it guy. He could do anything and even built his family’s house that he lived in until his passing. Barry greatly enjoyed spending time with his kids and coaching their sports teams.

For several decades, Barry struggled with mental illness that eventually led to a decline in his physical health. If you choose to do so, you may honor him with a memorial donation to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness, namivirginia.org/get-involved/donate).

The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation to be held at on Monday, March 25, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. A graveside service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. Please join the family in celebrating Barry’s life.
