Betty Susan Spangler Smith

Betty Susan Spangler Smith, 70, of Stewartsville, VA passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024, with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Helms Spangler and Thomas W Spangler: a stillborn son: a brother-in-law, Ed Powell and mother-in-law, Bassie Smith.

Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, Richard Wayne Smith; sons, Jason Smith and Michael Smith (Rachael); grandson, Logan Smith; granddaughter, Leighann Smith; great grandchildren, Kyliee, Victor and Lyle. Also left to cherish her memory, a sister Carolyn Powell, niece Susan Powell Richardson (Todd) and two sisters-in-law, Kathy Boyd (Bill) and Joyce Dodd (Jody).

Betty grew up in Alexandria, VA and graduated from Radford University in 1976. She taught Spanish and Latin in Roanoke County Schools for 30+ years and assisted with the school’s credit union for additional 5 years. During her tenure, she taught at Hidden Valley Middle School and William Byrd Junior and Senior High School.

Betty had an infectious laugh and loved her family, and her students. She enjoyed crocheting, working in her flowers and researching her family history.
She loved puppies (especially dachshunds) and loved sharing funny stories about her grand-cats Moe & Stormy.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, July 29, at Lotz Funeral Home Vinton, 305 E. Washington Ave. Vinton VA, 24179 with Pastor Terry Shaw officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00 pm prior to the service.
