Carmilla Claudia Massie
Carmilla Claudia Massie, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Carmilla was born on October 13, 1953, to the late John Helms and Martha Penn. Throughout her life, she treasured her family and the special bonds she shared with those closest to her. Her memory will be forever cherished by her loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Carmilla was preceded in death by her brothers, Abraham Helms, David Helms, Ricky Helms, and Frank Helms; her sisters, Mary Barbour, Mary Simmons, Elwonda Thomas, and Pearlie Hairston; her beloved husband, John H. Massie Junior.; her daughter, Gail Massie; and her grandson, Messiah Waller.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Twina Adams ( Keith), her grandchildren, Chequita Adams, Rayshere Adams, Laketia Adams, and Jazmine Massie; and her great-grandchildren, Keyounah Adams, Sha'Rion Adams, Kimora Adams, Jamilla Adams, Noah Cook, and Terriah Roberts. She is also survived by her loving twin sister, Carletta Via (Jessie).
Carmilla's life was a beautiful testament to the love of family. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind.
A funeral service celebrating Carmilla's life will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at True Gospel Holiness Church located at 2931 Spencer-Preston Rd, Martinsville, VA 24112. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
A floating visitation will also be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service.
Burial will follow the funeral service on Wednesday at True Gospel Holiness Church Cemetery.
Pastor LeeAnder Reynolds will officiate the service.
