Carroll William Bumgarner

February 7, 1932 - June 1, 2025

Carroll William Bumgarner, 93, joined loving wife Nancy Lee Shelton Bumgarner in the presence of the Lord early Sunday morning. He spent the last few years of his life at Chatham Rehab. He is survived by his three adult children, Melody (Mark) Van Der Hyde of Midlothian, VA, Kirk (Sonya) Bumgarner of Lincolnton, NC and Lee Shelton Bumgarner of Chatham, VA.

Carroll was a grandfather to six grandchildren. Mark Aaron (Cassie), Annie (Evan), Jamie, Chelsea (Sam), Lauren (Brock) and Caroline (Jake). He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, Amelia, Elias, Ari, Ashleigh, Elvis and Allie Mae.

Carroll is predeceased by six sisters, Georgie, Ellen, Hazel, Beth, Sue and Joy and two brothers, Charley and Tom.

A native of Miller’s Creek, NC, Mr. Bumgarner was born on February 7th, 1932 to Charles and Annie Bumgarner. Carroll joined the Navy during the Korean War. He sold his prized motorcycle to buy a ring for his girlfriend waiting for him in Sheva. The couple was married in 1955, ultimately married for 54 years until Nancy’s death.

Carroll co-founded B & G Garage, fulfilling his dream of being able to walk to work every day. He did just that for over 50 years. A cornerstone of the Tightsqueeze community, he was a long-time board member of Woodlawn Academy. He was a well-respected mechanic who provided expert automotive care to a customer base that adored him. He was a long-time member of Mill Creek Community Church in Sheva where he served as a deacon and trustee for many years. Carroll was on the DCC automotive program’s committee.

Carroll had a natural gift for photography, taking numerous candids of wedding celebrations over the years. He frequently regaled his family with a slide show of his time as a sailor.

A man of few words, Carroll was a kind and generous father to his family. He set an example for his children of what a loving father and leader of a home should be.

The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at Mill Creek Community Church, 3720 Chalk Level Rd, Chatham with Pastor Darrell Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the Shelton Family Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Service, Chatham Chapel, 147 S. Main Street, Chatham.
