Charles Simpson Bumgarner

Charles S. Bumgarner, Jr. of 206 Cathy Dr., Danville, Va. passed away on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022, at SOVAH Health in Danville. He was born in Lansing, NC to the late Charles S. Bumgarner, Sr. and Annie Patton Bumgarner. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Motley Bumgarner and by four sisters and one brother.

Mr. Bumgarner completed two years at Lees MacRae Junior College in Banner Elk, NC before enlisting in the Navy at the start of World War II. He served in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Essex and also aboard the USS Rainier. His rank at the time of discharge was Chief Electrician's Mate.

After leaving the Navy in 1945, he met and married his wife, Elizabeth Motley Bumgarner of Chatham, and graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. He spent many years working for the City of Danville Electric Department as an Electrical Engineer, and at the time of his retirement was in charge of all the electric substations for the City of Danville, based out of Bridge Street Electric.

He is survived by his daughter Mary Ann McKinnon and son-in-law John Ross McKinnon; grandsons Charles K. McKinnon and John Motley McKinnon, and John's wife Abigail Cosgriff; and two sisters and one brother, Carroll Bumgarner of Chatham. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Mill Creek Community Church, 3720 Chalk Level Rd, Chatham, Va. on Friday Nov. 4, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Darrell Campbell officiating, followed by a graveside service at the Shelton Family Cemetery on Chalk Level Rd.
