Curtis Bennett

November 18, 1928 - January 14, 2025

Curtis Aldophus Bennett, Senior, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, in Lynchburg, Virginia, at the age of 96.  Born on November 18, 1928, in Manchester, Jamaica, Indies, Curtis was the beloved son of Ivy Russell and Cornelius Bennett and was loving raised by his grandparents, Emma Coley Russell and Percival Russell.

Curtis spent his early years in Saint Andrews and Kingston, where he trained in various trades. While working as an apprentice baker, he seized an opportunity to work on farms in the United States, leaving behind family and friends in pursuit of a brighter future.  In 1953, he was baptized at Bay Street Seventh-day Adventist Church in Springfield, Massachusetts.  The following year, he married Bertha E. Stiff in March 1954.  Together, they built a life rooted in faith and love.

After moving from Massachusetts to Connecticut, Curtis became an active member of Calvary Seventh-day Adventist Church.  He held numerous roles within the church community, including Sabbath School leader, public relations officer, church photographer, elder, and board member.  His devotion to God and his church was evident in all aspects of his life.

Curtis worked for Jenkins Bros for 31 years until the plant’s closure in 1989 and later worked as a driver for Connecticut Limousine from 1988 to 1990.  Outside of work, he found joy in photography, storytelling for children, reading poems at church, gardening, and caring for his pet goats and raising chickens and guinea hens.  Known for his willingness to help others and his love for family and friends, Curtis touched many lives with his kindness.

He is survived by his wife Bertha; children Marva Haughton, Elaine Price, Daphne Lindo, Colleen Bennett, Curtis Jr., and Valerie Campbell; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his daughter Vidette Bennett.

Curtis will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.  May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.
