Daniel Gregory Stone

January 29, 1963 - August 10, 2024

Daniel Stone, born on January 29, 1963, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, in Salem, Virginia, at the age of 61. Throughout his life, Daniel called many places home, including Wilkes-Barre, Northampton, and Mountaintop, PA; Horseheads and Fredonia, NY; and Virginia Beach, Suffolk, and Fincastle, VA.

Daniel was a proud graduate of Horseheads High School, Class of 1980. He continued his education at SUNY Fredonia before answering the call to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a diver and submariner. His naval career took him to Africa and the Middle East, and he later continued his service in the Naval Reserves. Daniel brought that same dedication to his professional life, where he worked in contracting, home and commercial inspections, electrical work, and leadership roles. In 2022, he graduated from the Academy of Advanced Manufacturing as a certified Instrumentation, Automation, and Controls Technician.  As a lifelong learner, Daniel was enrolled at Liberty University and was on track to graduate in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science degree before his illness.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Daniel found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid guitar enthusiast, loved golfing, and enjoyed fishing. He also took great pride in the hands-on work of remodeling his farm and home. Even during his four-month battle with esophageal cancer, Daniel's sense of humor and spirit remained unshaken, surrounded by the love and care of those closest to him.

Daniel’s memory is cherished by his companion, Debbie Harris of Fincastle, VA. His memory also lives on in his sons, Michael Daniel Stone of Aldie, VA, along with his wife Anne and daughter Gwen; Mathis Stone; and Carson Stone and his wife, Kaitlyn, of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also cherished by his parents, Ann and Greg Stone of Big Flats, NY; his brother, Greg Stone of Big Flats, NY; his sister, Leandra Sullivan and her husband Mark of Horseheads, NY, along with her children and grandchildren; his brother, Matthew Stone and his wife Katrina of Hornby, NY, with their children and grandchildren; and his sister, Stephanie Henning and her husband Tom of Lanexa, VA, with their two sons.

A memorial ceremony to celebrate Daniel’s life will be held on September 14th at the Hilltop Inn in Elmira, NY, 2pm to 5pm. Friends and family are invited to monitor the Facebook pages of Ann and Greg Stone or Matthew Stone for updates.
