David Gaunt Thompson
David Gaunt Thompson, 74, of Eagle Rock, Virginia, formerly of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2026. He passed peacefully while at home with his wife and daughters by his side. Dave was raised in Harleysville, Pennsylvania. In 1983, he and his family relocated to Eagle Rock, Virginia. Dave suffered a devastating log-cutting accident 26 years ago in December 2000, and his life was forever changed due to his injuries. He designed and created ways to live as independently as possible as a paraplegic, while continuing to accomplish the work and responsibilities at home. He accomplished this with remarkable determination and strength. He was admired and respected by all who knew him for his resilience, ingenuity, and fighting spirit. Dave's body finally gave in after the many medical challenges he faced. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pamella Gehlert Thompson (Pam), and by his three beloved daughters: Tamela Denise Thompson Steger (Tammie) and her spouse, Jody; Shauna Lee Thompson Jones and her spouse, Brent; and Kelly Ann Thompson Miller and her spouse, Ed. He was also blessed with seven grandchildren, who added great joy to his life. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Harold Thompson Sr. and Elizabeth Dorothy Morrison Thompson; and by his sister, Linda Dorothy Thompson-Tressler (Lindy) (survived by partner, Romy). He is also survived by his siblings: Robert Harold Thompson Jr. (Skip) and his spouse, Joyce; William Rawdon Thompson (Bill) and his spouse, Susan; Cynthia Elizabeth Thompson Bartholomew (Cindy) and her spouse, Nick; and Colleen Mary Thompson Goodman. Dave was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed shooting and mastering the art of bow hunting. While living in Pennsylvania, he owned and operated a siding and roofing business. After moving to Virginia, he worked for Utility Line Equipment in Roanoke and later at the Roanoke Cement Plant. A memorial gathering to honor Dave's life will be held at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 6 to 8 pm.
