Delores “Dee” Mae Bernard Dunaway, 84, resident of 4345 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at home with her family by her side. Dee was born April 9, 1948 in Lynchburg, VA to Elmer Earl Bernard and Ernestine Caroline Davis Bernard.
December 24, 1956 Dee married the love of her life, James Henry Dunaway. From their marriage they had 4 children. In the summer of 1967, they moved the family from Richmond to Danville and joined Mount Hermon Baptist Church where she became church secretary after getting her GED in 1969. She then in 1972, became secretary at Tuscarora Country Club until 1978 and while working there, she attended school and got her real estate license in 1976, her broker license in 1986 and was still active in the real estate market until the time of her passing. Dee loved reading, camping, visiting Williamsburg in the different seasons, having cookouts with her family and spoiling her grandkids were just a few of the things she loved to do.
Dee was very active at her church having served on several committees, also traveling to Panama on a mission trip in 1998. Locally over the years, she served with Habitat for Humanity, Board of Realtors, Dry Fork Ruritan Club and serving meals at the community Christmas Dinner. Dee found great joy in her love for her family. Those in heaven waiting for her with open arms are her parents, her husband of 48 years, 2 sons, James Henry Dunaway Jr., Robert Starling Dunaway, her sister Sue Buisset, and brother in law Bill Buisset.
