Douglas Deaner
Douglas MacArthur Deaner, 81, of Charlotte Court House, passed away quietly in his sleep on Friday, December 15, 2023.
Everyone knew him as Doug and if you called him Mr. Deaner, he would tell you “That’s my daddy’s name just call me Doug.”
Doug was born at home in a West Virginia coal mine town named Tams on March 8, 1942, to the late Charlie and Frances Griffith Deaner. Doug grew up in Tams and Baltimore, MD before his family moved to a farm near Madisonville, Virginia to be closer to family.
Dad loved to tell us stories about the mischief he and his cousin got into when visiting the coal town after they moved. He would tell me about living in Baltimore as a kid collecting bottles to turn in for money to go to the movies and how his dad could beat him and his friends playing marbles in the alley behind the row house they lived in. I wonder sometimes how he made it through childhood since he managed to get shot and stabbed and had about every childhood ailment including polio.
Doug graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte Court House in 1961 and went into the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic in 1962. After serving his country he went to work in Lynchburg and ended up retiring as a welder from BWXT.
Doug enjoyed doing so many things over the years: farming, fishing, reading, watching westerns and sports, and visiting with family and friends. He also loved hunting either in the mountains or on the farm, which was usually a family affair with his kids, his dad, uncles and cousins and friends.
He is survived by his three children, Dawn “Missy” Deaner Eberl and her husband, Kevin of Lynchburg, Deborah “Debbie” Deaner Norton and her husband, Rick of Newport, TN and Scott Deaner and his wife, Holly of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Ricky Norton, Holly Norton, Jake Deaner, Case Deaner and Jadyn Deaner; his former wife Linda Deaner and many other family members including his cousin Shelby Deaner, Jr. who was more like a brother.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Deaner and Bernard Deaner.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Robinson Funeral Home with Pastor Anthony Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Monday, December 18, 2023, at Robinson Funeral Home.
