Eleanor Wills Campbell

Eleanor Wills Campbell, 87, of Monroe, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026, at Fairmont Crossing.

Born in Lynchburg on January 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Frank James Wills, Sr. and Lula Harris Wills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Ray Campbell; her daughter, Wanda Gayle Campbell; her son in law, Steven O’Brien and two brothers, Frank James Wills, Jr. and Charles Edward Wills.

Eleanor retired from General Electric and Ericsson in Lynchburg after many years of service. She was a longtime and faithful member of Elon Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Family was at the heart of Eleanor’s life, and few things brought her more happiness than supporting those she loved. She especially treasured watching “her boys” play sports and, as the years passed, continued that tradition by faithfully attending their children’s sporting events. Whether it was a big game or an ordinary one, Eleanor wanted to be there. She rarely missed an opportunity to sit in the stands, cheer them on and let them know how proud she was of them. Her love of sports extended to professional football as well, and she was an avid Washington Redskins fan.

Eleanor also expressed her love for others through cooking and hospitality. An excellent cook, she loved preparing meals for her family and bringing everyone together around the table. Her home always had an open-door policy, and family and friends knew they were welcome. There was always room for one more, and she took great pleasure in having a house filled with people, conversation, laughter and plenty of good food. Family gatherings were especially important to her, and some of her happiest times were simply spent surrounded by the people she loved.

She is survived by her daughter, Faye O’Brien of Monroe; three grandchildren; “her boys”; and a number of special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Eleanor’s life and faith will be conducted at a later date.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Tony Campbell for the love, care and devotion he showed Eleanor throughout the years. Tony made a promise to Eleanor’s husband, William, that he would take care of her for the rest of her life, and he faithfully honored that promise. His steadfast presence and dedication to Eleanor will always be remembered with deep gratitude.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Elon Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
