Ernest Ashton "E.A." Downey, Jr.

Ernest Ashton "E.A." Downey, Jr., 64, of Salem, Va., and formerly of Glen Wilton, Va., went to join his grandbaby in Heaven on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

E.A. was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed trips to Claytor Lake and Bradenton, Florida, and was a lifelong member of the Roanoke Valley Four Wheelers Association. Above all, E.A. loved his family and especially treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Ashton Downey, Sr. and Doris Marie Downey Byer; and his beloved granddaughter, Kimber Grace.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Deborah Crans Downey; daughters, Renea Guill (Shane) and Melissa Downey; brother, Danny Byer; grandchildren, M'Kenzie, Ashton, Ellie, and Luke; dear friend, Ernie Fowler; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the funeral home.
