Evelyn Rakes

February 12, 1932 - September 3, 2024

Evelyn Crotts Rakes, 92, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

She was born on February 12, 1932, to the late Amos Maxwell and Erma Carlena Frantz Crotts. Throughout her life, she grew to love ceramics, became an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and cheered on the Washington Redskins which brought her much happiness. What she cherished most, though, was her family and the time they spent together.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Hubert G. Rakes.

Her surviving family includes her daughters, Judith Rakes Robertson (Clinton), Debbie Rakes Puckett, and Cathy Rakes Schiffer; grandchildren, Kristin Hatcher Famuliner (Chance), Richard “Chip” Hatcher, and Kristen Puckett (Keeoyn); great-grandchildren, Noah Hatcher, Terra Famuliner, Marin Famuliner, Randi Puckett, Zamari Ramsey, Xaeden Ramsey, Keylan Ramsey, Keyonni Ramsey, Triston Duncan (Chandler), Izik Duncan, and Aiddon Duncan.

She was involved in church her entire life and was a member at West Salem Baptist for over 20 years. Christ was her solid ground and she loved the Lord with her whole heart. Her life exemplified 2nd Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”.

The family is eternally grateful for Dr. Konstance, Good Samaritan Hospice, and especially her nurse, Kendra, who stayed with the family during Evelyn’s passing.

All are invited to celebrate Evelyn’s life beginning with a period of visitation on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel. A funeral service will then take place on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 11 a.m., also in the chapel, with Pastor Nick Shaffer officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Sherwood Memorial Park.
