November 2, 1941 - February 21, 2023

Floyd Edward Hayes, Jr. aka “Major of Chestnut Knob”, 81, of Ridgeway, Virginia passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at his residence. He was born November 2, 1941, in Ridgeway, Virginia to Floyd Edward Hayes, Sr. and Nora Lee Watkins-Hayes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Hope Hairston-Hayes; and two sisters, Irene Hayes-Hahn and Barbara Jean Hayes Wade. He worked at Fieldcrest Cannon, where he retired. He was an avid outdoors man always on a tractor, mowing grass, cutting hay, cutting trees for firewood and serving the community in various capacities (picking up trash, getting furnace oil and other odds and ends). He LOVED his family and friend--he did not miss a day without speaking to one of his siblings. During his free time he enjoyed watching Judge Judy, Naked and Afret (suppose to be Naked and Afraid), wrestling, Ice Road Truckers and Heavy Rescue all while snacking on Ruffles with Ridges chips, Dr. Pepper and Caramel Creams Candy (Cow Tales). He was a lifelong member of Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Trustee and sung with the Male Chorus, a member of the G. P. Watkins Masonic Lodge #320, and a member of the Chestnut Knob Ruritan. He is survived by his children, Donna, Stephen, Floyd, Terri and Iris Hayes, all of Ridgeway, Virginia. He will also be sadly missed by Red and Lil’Lun (Lil One) his four legged children; sisters, Yvonne (Raleigh) Lipford of Washington, DC; Mildred Ann (Ernie) Ward and Loystean Hayes of Ridgeway, Virginia; brothers, Clyde Hayes of Los Vegas, Nevada; Michael (Michelle) Hayes of Gastonia, North Carolina and Donald Wayne Hayes, of Ridgeway, Virginia; and brother-in-law, John Lester Wade, of Fieldale, Virginia. To his extended roots, he leaves 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and family, as well as many many many friends to cherish his love, lessons, funny wit and memories. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February, 25, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Walker Family Cemetery. Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.wrightfuneralservices.net
