Frances Louise Johnson Wygal
Frances J. "Fran" Wygal Obituary Frances Johnson Wygal, 101 ½, of Salem, Va passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024. Her husband of 60 years, Verlin Whittier Wygal, preceded her death. Fran was born in Conway, South Carolina to the late Frank and Roxie Johnson. She was the oldest of four sisters and one brother: Ruby Nance, Aline Oliver, Daisy Lester, Mildred Dew, and Olin D. Johnson. Fran graduated from Chadbourn High School in Chadbourn, North Carolina, and Worth Business College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She also attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fran was a special lady who loved life, cooking for family dinners, playing Bridge, and will be greatly missed by all. It was love at first sight for Fran and Verlin Wygal and they were married on January 5, 1946. Fran met Verlin as he was getting out of the Army and three weeks later, he charmed her into marrying him. They had made their home in Salem—Verlin’s hometown. This is where Fran gave birth to Verlin E “Gino” Wygal, Vicki Argenbright, and Steven Wygal. Fran started working for Welcome Wagon calling on new brides and newcomers in Roanoke. Through the years Fran owned and operated two gift shops before going on the road as a Manufacturing Representative for Nilan’s Alley. They had six grand darlings: Donna Argenbright, Heather Shellehamer, Big Tyler, Nathan, Lauren Grace, and Little Tyler Wygal, and a great-granddaughter, Maci Bell.The family extends their deepest gratitude to the loving staff of the Raleigh Court Health & Rehabilitation Center.
