Frances Maxine Duncan Cumbee

September 3, 1944 - July 7, 2026

Frances Maxine Duncan Cumbee entered the gates of Heaven on the sunny afternoon of Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Born on September 3, 1944, in Bluefield, West Virginia, she was raised in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she spent her entire life surrounded by family, friends, and the community she loved. Maxine was known for her strong work ethic and kind heart. She worked for more than 25 years at Imperial Reading, where she formed many lifelong friendships. She later continued her career at TJ Maxx, dedicating another 25 years of service and making even more cherished friends along the way. She was a devoted member of Oak Grove Church in Christiansburg. Her church family meant the world to her, and she loved each of them dearly. Her faith was the foundation of her life and a source of strength throughout the years. Outside of work, Maxine treasured spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed family trips to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She loved gospel music and rarely missed an opportunity to attend local gospel concerts and events. Her warm smile, generous spirit, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be remembered by all who knew her. Maxine was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Mason Duncan; her mother, Irene Edith Duncan; and her sister, Diana Carroll Ratcliff. She is survived by her loving daughter, Cindy Cumbee Davis (Johnny); her son, Richard Neil Cumbee; her two granddaughters, Kelley Davis and Courtney Wooddell; her dear friend, Becky Smith; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will miss her deeply. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Duke Cancer Center and Blue Ridge Cancer Center for the compassionate care they provided over the past 11 years. They also wish to express their sincere appreciation to Lewis Gale Medical Center and Dr. Tuono for their kindness and exceptional care during Maxine’s final days. Maxine leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, hard work, and friendship. She will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched, but her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00 am in the McCoy Funeral Chapel with Pastors David Neal and Neal Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 am prior to the service.
