Francis "John" S. Porterfield

Francis “John” S. Porterfield, age 90, of Blacksburg moved to his eternal home, Sunday, September 20, 2026. He was born in Newport, Virginia on January 17, 1936, to the late James Douglas and Effie Ola Hicks Porterfield. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lois Linkous Porterfield and sister, Mary Douglas McDonald. John was a member of Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was a veteran of the United States Army. He attended Lynchburg College, and graduated from VPI & SU. He began his career as a dishwater at Mountain Lake Hotel. He became a manager and marketer of Allstate Insurance and later became President of Hanover Midwestern South Insurance Company, where John retired from. He is survived by his son, Gregory Porterfield; grandchildren, Austin Porterfield and Kristen Porterfield; special cousin, Janice Ruth Hypes; niece, Becky Frame (Edsel), and family as well as, several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted, Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 11:00 am, in the Blacksburg Christian Church. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 240 Watson Avenue, Blacksburg, Virginia 24060.
