Gail Rowell Macfarland

Gail Rowell MacFarland, 80, of Salem, VA, passed away on October 18, 2026. Born May 21, 1946, in the City of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, to the late Charles Fletcher Rowell, Sr and Evelyn Goobie Rowell. Gail found great joy in giving her time and caring for others. Whether helping with a project or lending a hand where she was needed, she was happiest when she could make someone else's day a little brighter. Her generosity extended to the causes and community she cherished. She was involved with the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Wildflower Society from its earliest days, even before it formally became a society in 1984. Gail also looked forward to volunteering at the Salem Public Library's annual book sale, a tradition that brought people together around books and benefited a place she valued. Through her kindness and steady service, Gail left a lasting mark on her community. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 61 years, Bruce A. MacFarland; their children, Becky Hartless (Nathan), Jeff MacFarland (Robin); her siblings, Chuck Rowell (Brenda), Bob Rowell (Beverly); grandchildren, Justin (Dani), Tim (Sarah), Brittany; great-grandchildren, Bentley, Molly, and Sienna. The family welcomes friends to visit on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home located in Salem, VA.
