It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gary Lee Cannaday, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on July 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with aggressive cancer. Born on March 31,1959, in Martinsville, Virginia. Gary grew up in the close-knit community of Ferrum, Virginia, and later made his home in Rocky Mount, Virginia, where he became a cherished member of the community. Gary was the dearly loved son of the late Donald Cannaday and Dorthy Emberson Cannaday. He is predeceased by his parents, but his legacy continues through his devoted wife, Judy Cannaday; his beloved daughter Jamie O'Bryant and her husband, Rick; and his treasured grandchildren, Jalyn, Caleb, and Logan O'Bryant. Gary is also survived by his brother, Donald (Buster) Cannaday; his sisters, Rita Cannaday and Gloria Bradley; his cherished aunt, Venie Emberson Brown; his in-laws, Patricia Pinto, Wanda Manning(Jeff), Dean Fralin(Sarah), Kenny Fralin(Brandy), Annette Fralin, many nieces, nephews, and cousins who brought immerse joy to his life. A graduate of Franklin County High School in 1978 and a proud alumnus of Trans Tech Driver Training in 1996, Gary dedicated 30 years of his life to the open road as a semi-truck driver. His career was marked not only by his professional dedication but also by the countless friendships he made along the way. Known for his warm smile and infectious sense of humor, Gary had the unique ability to bring laughter to any situation. His penchant for joking and kidding around endeared him to all who knew him, and he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Gary's love for sports was surpassed only by his devotion to his family. Whether it was cheering on his favorite NASCAR driver, catching a baseball game, or attending his grandchildren's soccer matches, Gary's enthusiasm was boundless. He found great joy in supporting the activities of his loved ones and celebrated their achievements with pride. As we remember Gary, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of community. His memory will continue to inspire us all to live with kindness and compassion, just as he did. In lieu of flowers the family kindly request that donations be made in Gary's memory to a charity of your choice or to a local organization that supports cancer research. A service to honor Gary's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share stories and remember the joy he brought into our lives. Until then, we hold onto the memories of a man who touched the hearts of many, and whose spirit will remain with us always.
