Gary Lee Thomas

October 31, 1947 - April 28, 2025

Gary Lee Thomas, 77 of Salem, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025. He was born on October 31, 1947, in Roanoke, Va, son of the late Charles E. and Beatrice Viola Austin Thomas.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Howlett Thomas.

Left to mourn his passing are Debbie Gee (Jeff), Heather Rider (Lee), Charlie Thomas (Jess), Amy Clarke, Jodi Bishop, and Keith Thomas; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and many dear friends.

Gary proudly served his country in the United Sates Army from 1965 until 1970, where he obtained skills that would later assist him with the opening of his local business. He owned and operated Thomas Automotive, in Salem, for 55 years before retiring. As a local business owner, he formed numerous lasting friendships with his neighbors and patrons. He had a successful career as a drag racer, where he won many trophies for his custom-built drag cars and hot rods.

In addition to cars, he spent his time rescuing neighborhood stray cats, many of which he later adopted.

Gary will forever be remembered for his bright blue eyes, contagious smile, and kind heart.

The family wishes to thank Gary’s neighbors, Jason and Jessica Poe for always being there when needed most.

The family will welcome friends for a period of visitation on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.

A military honors presentation will be rendered by The Virginia Army National Guard, for his faithful service to his country starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral homes chapel.
