Harold "Strawberry" Kenneth Campbell

March 1, 1932 - March 22, 2024

Harold Kenneth “Strawberry” Campbell, 92, of Glade Hill, VA, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024. Born and raised in Redwood, VA, he was the eldest son of the late Howard and Queenell Campbell and is predeceased by brothers, Earl and Ronnie; sisters, Geraldine Anne, Norma Jean Morris (Harold) and Georgia Hodges; and grandson, Matthew.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 71 years, Fern; sister, Sue (Winford) Hodges; two sons, Kenneth (Sheila Umberger) and Timothy; one daughter, Deborah; two granddaughters, Marla Campbell (Dexter Blosser) and Amy Markland (Mike); grandson, Travis Carter (Sarah); and five great-granddaughters, Ainsley Walker, Grace Markland, Katherine Carter, Callie Markland, and Molly Carter.

A proud Marine Corps veteran, Harold served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in the line of duty. After the war he returned home and worked until retirement as a mechanic at Dupont. Despite being officially retired, Harold stayed active, namely by operating a 100-plus acre farm with cattle and tobacco.

Harold was well known for being a hard worker, dependable neighbor, and steadfast Christian man. To his closest loved ones, though, he will be best remembered as a loyal and loving family man. Harold and Fern married on October 31, 1953, and his devotion to her never wavered. He was proud of his children, often bragging to neighbors and strangers about their accomplishments. However, nothing filled his heart with joy as much as spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His stern manner would drop, and he could be found entertaining them around the farm with tractor rides, fresh blackberries he’d just picked, and trips to “see the cows.” A master Rook player, Harold taught his grandchildren how to play but none of them ever won a game against him. He was a force, and the world is a little less brave and strong with his absence.

Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024 with Pastor Pete Trout and Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in the Arrington Family Cemetery at Crafts Church (Crafts Lane, Glade Hill, VA 24151) with Military Honors. His family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
