Herbert Preston Helms

Herbert Preston Helms, 78, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024. He was born October 18, 1945, in Boissevain, Virginia, to the late Eugene Robert Helms, Sr. and Nellie Mae Lethcoe Helms.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Robert Helms, Jr.Herbert proudly served in the Unites States Army. He attended Northwest High School in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Herbert was a hard worker and worked as a carpenter and in maintenance in the furniture industry for many years. He worked for Martin Processing and Hooker Furniture and enjoyed his time working. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching westerns, playing bluegrass music with his guitar, and wood working. Herbert loved his family, friends and his little dog Princess; spending time with them was what meant the most to him. He was known to be full of personality and enjoyed life. When he was able, he loved doing things for his church.He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Patricia Aheron Helms; daughters, Renae Wilkerson (Kevin) and Susan Helms (Michael Roberts); son, Tony Helms (Lisa); honorary son, Chris “Tarheel” Worley; sisters, Cynthia Lucille Haden (Clark), Teresa Irene King (Cloyd), Dorothy Sue Leftwich (Rod), and Rose Ella Crowder (Steve); brother, David Allen Helms, Sr. (Linda); grandchildren, Anthony Helms (Karissa), Jesse Helms (Megan), Talor Goins (Ben), Ryan Wilkerson (Tiffany Bailey), and Trinity Hovey (Eric); and great grandchildren, Brody Helms, Brooks Helms, and Demi Hovey.The memorial service will be Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 4:00 PM at Northside Baptist Church, 8911 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, Virginia 24055 with Pastor Brandon Dupont officiating.
