Herman Otis Johnston

Herman Otis Johnston, 89, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born on April 19, 1935, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Noell Johnston and Mary Kate Huff Johnston. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Emeline Huffman Johnston; sons, Larry and Ronnie Johnston; sister, Shirley Shelton; brothers, Woodrow, Junior, and Clarence Johnston.

Herman was married to his wife for 66 years until her passing in 2019. He worked for Martinsville Concrete Products for over 30 years. After retiring, he spent time working on cars for Milton Kendal. In addition to his work, he enjoyed cutting wood, raising a garden, mowing grass, working on vehicles, especially his ‘49 Plymouth, spending time with his grandkids, Emma and Gavin, and helping anyone in need.

Herman spent his days with Amanda Johnston Smith, who provided his care in her home. He loved Amanda deeply; she was like a daughter to him.

Herman is survived by his sons, Mike, Gary, and Shane Johnston; sister, Pauline Walker; grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Michael Johnston, Dustin Johnston, Jesse Johnston, and Tonya Adkins; great-grandchildren, Emma Smith, Gavin Smith, Blake Johnston, Everleigh Johnston, Kali Adkins, Savannah Adkins, Ethan Adkins, and Cash Adkins; uncle, Mauris Huff; special friend, Lucille Shelton, and his beloved dogs, Jack, Tucker, and Ashier.

The Johnston family would like to extend a special thank you to Sovah Hospice, especially Mallory Knight, for her exceptional care for our Pa.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 5:00 PM, at Granbery Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Norris Funeral Services, Inc. & Crematory – Martinsville for Herman’s funeral arrangements.
