Irene Louise Schaible

Irene Louise Carmody Schaible, 91, of Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Our Lady of the Valley in Roanoke. Irene was born November 8, 1932 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Cyril and Irene Carmody, election day for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first term. She graduated from Linden High School in 1950, 4th in her class and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Cornell University in 1955. When she started working in the operating room, she was one of only two nurses in the entire hospital with a Bachelor’s Degree. She met her future husband, John, in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey when they were teenagers and they raised their family in Maplewood and later Warren, New Jersey. She left nursing to raise her five children and then returned to work at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ 18 years later when her youngest started first grade. After retiring from nursing, she worked in the library and guidance department at Pingry School’s campus in Basking Ridge, NJ. Irene enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, solving crossword puzzles, flower gardening, weeding, and relaxing at the beach or the lake with her family and friends. She retired to Smith Mountain Lake, VA with her husband in 1994 where she lived for the next 30 years. Irene was a communicant of Our Lady of the Mount Roman Catholic Church in Warren for 30 years and Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta, Virginia for the next 30 years. She is survived by her sons, John (Debra) of Lebanon, NJ, Russell (Laura) of Charleston, SC, James (Sonja) of Wirtz, VA; daughter, Diane Rosamilia (Steve) of New York City; daughter-in-law, Lisa Marazzo of Scotch Plains, NJ; six grandsons; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, John; and son, Richard. The family will receive friends at Our Lady of the Mount in Warren, NJ at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024 followed by a funeral Mass, and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum, Basking Ridge, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated. Local arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
