James Buckner "Jay" Massey, III

November 3, 1944 - August 29, 2024

James Buckner “Jay” Massey III of Roanoke, Virginia, was born on November 3, 1944, in Washington, D.C., and departed this life on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

He spent his early life in Baltimore, Maryland, and Norfolk, Virginia. Jay received his secondary education at Norfolk Academy and his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. His passion for flying began at an early age, and he qualified for his private pilot license before receiving his automobile driver’s license.

Post graduation Jay was commissioned in the United States Navy where he served as a carrier pilot, landing signal officer, and flight instructor. He later graduated from the University of Virginia Law School where he was Order of the Coif.

Jay settled in Roanoke, Virginia, with his wife, Donna Parker Massey and his son, Andrew D. Massey, initially practiced law at Woods, Rogers, Muse, Walker and Thornton, and then established Coleman & Massey, P.C. from which he retired in 2019.

At various times in his career, he was active in Mill Mountain Theatre, American Red Cross, Downtown Roanoke, Inc., and the Blue Ridge Soaring Society.

In retirement he enjoyed thinking about new hobbies, spending time with friends and family, almost daily conversations with his son and granddaughters, and visits to the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his parents, James B. Massey Jr. and Helen Collings Massey; his first wife, Donna Parker Massey; and his sister, Elizabeth Massey Kramer.

He is survived by his second wife, Nan; his son, Andrew; his grandchildren, Angelina and Alyssa; his brother, Thomas C. Massey and wife, Sarah; his brother, Joseph P. Massey; and loving nieces and nephews.
