James Courtney Parr

James Courtney Parr, affectionately known as "J.C.," or “Jim,” fell asleep in death on July 30, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on August 7, 1933, to Fenton Walter Parr and Nancy Armstrong.

J.C. was raised in Botetourt County, Virginia, on Craigs Creek at the family home known as Mulberry Bottom. He attended Eagle Rock High School before continuing his education at Berea College in Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Agriculture.

Following his education, J.C. served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany in the 101st Airborne Division. After his military service, he began a successful career in sales management of agricultural products with Southern States. J.C. proudly worked in the agricultural sector until his retirement from Rohm and Hass at age 65. J.C. filled his time with family and fishing at his property on Lake Gaston where many cherished memories were made.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fenton Walter Parr and Nancy Armstrong Parr; his wives, Shirley Parr and Phyllis Parr; his children, Robert Glenn Parr and Janet Lynn Parr; and his siblings, Fenton Curtis Parr, Rachel Parr Hippert, Thomas Dewey Parr, and Gayle Parr Dillon.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Nancy Parr Doyle (Frank), and his son, John Parr. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Sandy Redd (Rick), Joanne Spurrell, Richard "Buster" Curtis Jr. (Donna), and Wayne Curtis (Lori).

J.C. leaves behind his grandchildren, Stephen Doyle (Lacey), Megan Doyle, and Tamara Edwards; and his great-grandchildren, Cameron, Adyson, Spencer, and Poppy.

Jim is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Parr Hammond, Joan Parr McCray, and Martha "Ducky" Parr Barnes, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Jim will be remembered fondly for his strong work ethic, his love of family, and the many relationships he cultivated throughout his long life. His roots in Botetourt County and the values he learned growing up at Mulberry Bottom remained with him throughout his life. J.C. was a dedicated father, steadfast in his leadership and commitment to those he held dear. He will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 3, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Chapel with Rev. Bobby Pickle officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Chapel (540)366-0707.
