James Daniel Nelson
James Daniel Nelson, Jr. age 71 passed away Friday, November 15th at his home surrounded by loved ones.
James was known by most as “JD” or “Danny”. He was born in South Boston, VA on December 22, 1952, the son of the late James Daniel Nelson, Sr. and Mary Melvina Pool Nelson. Danny worked for Winn Dixie Grocery stores for over 30 years, excelling as a store manager at many locations before settling at the Cane Creek store in Danville. In his later years, he worked for Green Rock Prison in the commissary department, and after retirement, worked as a freelance driver for various auto dealerships in the area. Danny made many lasting friendships during his career in the grocery business and later as he drove up and down the East Coast.
Danny was a fan of stock car racing, and frequented South Boston Speedway among other regional NASCAR venues. He could also be found at various local concerts and festivals enjoying live music and socializing. To his many nieces and nephews, he was “Uncle Danny” and his grandchildren knew him lovingly as “Pops”.
Danny is survived by his wife Cynthia Nichols Nelson of South Boston, VA his son Greg Nelson (Donna) of Alton, VA, his three loving sisters Brenda Lowery of Chester, VA, Ella Evans (Glenn) of South Boston, VA, Marilyn Stewart (Gaylon) of South Boston, VA, and three grandchildren Shea, Wyatt, and Bryce Nelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son James Daniel Nelson III of Roanoke, VA, and sister Rebecca Elliott of Goochland, VA
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Hillcrest Baptist Church 4401 Westover Drive Danville VA, at 1:00 PM with Pastor Bob Yeaman officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior at the church.
Interment will follow at Floral Hill Memorial Gardens, Danville, VA.
