James "Don" Donald Field

April 30, 1939 - March 22, 2024

James Donald (Don) Field, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024.

Known for his integrity and well-earned respect, Don was loved by his family and long-time church family, living his whole life in Roanoke, Virginia. He worked for Norfolk & Western (later, NS) Railroad as a structural engineer, then operated his own home inspection business in the greater Roanoke region. He loved to tinker with projects and inventions in his home shop, beach trips, watching sports, golfing, maintaining his estate, and serving his beloved Washington Heights Grace Brethren Church.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Priscilla Sutton Field; his son, Thomas Field (Emily) of Salem, Virginia; daughter, Karen Starrett (Grant) of Lebanon, Ohio; sons James (Jim) Field (Alicia) of Burke, Virginia; Daniel Field and Joel Field of Roanoke; nephew, Mike Field of Anna Maria Island, Florida; grandchildren, Kelsey Monahan (Mike); Hayley Ohl (Matt); Lauren Webb (Evan); Jessica (Starrett) Baker (Daniel); Alex Starrett; Andrew Starrett; Jeremiah Field; Samantha Field; Joseph Field; and great-grandchildren, Evie Ohl; Isabelle Ohl; and Griffin Monahan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Thomas Field; and brother, Gerald Field of Champaign, Illinois.

A service celebrating Don’s life will be held at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Friday, March 29th at 11:00am; visitation Thursday, March 28th from 7 to 9pm. (Graveside service following the service on Friday is at Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke.)
