James Earnest Manuel
James Earnest Manuel, 86, of Snow Creek, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026. A man of quiet strength and profound practical wisdom, James leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, and an enduring love for the outdoors.Born on August 22, 1939, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, James was the son of the late Raleigh and Carrie Cox Manuel. He answered the call to serve his country early in life, spending four years in the United States Marine Corps. After completing basic training at Parris Island, he served in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa, Japan, from 1962 to 1965.Upon returning to civilian life, James dedicated 35 years to his career as a cable splicer for Centel (Sprint). He was a man blessed with a "common sense education" that his family proudly remembers as surpassing any modern degree. He truly relished his well-earned years of retirement, filling his days with the things he loved most.James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delorese Overstreet, whom he married on December 27, 1961, and who passed away in 1990. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jamieson, and his special friend, Judy Swartz of Pennsylvania. His memory lives on through his family children, Phillip Manuel (Robin) of Blacksburg and Lynn Hatchett (Randy) of Snow Creek; grandchildren, Kari Gilliam (Max) of Rustburg, Kyle and Caleb Manuel of Blacksburg, and Casey Hatchett of Snow Creek; great-grandsons, Tyler and Dale Gilliam; sister, Marie Martin of Collinsville; best friend and brother-in-law, Euell Overstreet (Kathy) of Snow Creek. An avid deer hunter, James was never more at home than when he was in the woods. He possessed the rare patience to sit in a tree stand from sunrise to sunset, simply enjoying the stillness of nature. He was a humble man who was always there for those who needed him. To his family, he was a steady anchor—a man of few words but immense impact.
