James Thomas Wood
James Thomas Wood, Jr., 67, of Bassett, Virginia, entered the presence of his Savior on Sunday, August 16, 2026. He was born on April 28, 1959, in Martinsville, Virginia, to James Thomas Wood, Sr. and Clara Jean Joyce Wood, both deceased.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny R. Wood.
James was a man of strong Christian faith and a devoted member of Clearview Wesleyan Church. He loved his church family and faithfully supported its ministries. Whether he was mowing the church lawn, teaching the youth, or serving on the church board, James was a leader and guided others by example and in quietly working behind the scenes to help in any way possible.
He worked at Winn-Dixie for over 28 years, Taylors Supermarket, and most recently, he was employed at Food Lion. James was an ardent supporter of his community, especially in local sports. Many will fondly remember James as a youth sports coach and for the positive influence he had on young people. He also played softball for over 30 years. In quieter moments, he found joy in listening to gospel music. James exemplified hard work, frugality, dedication, and integrity. People were drawn to his kindness and felt loved and valued when they met him.
James’ life was marked by gentleness, humility, and a sincere desire for everyone he met to know Jesus and to have the hope of Heaven one day. He lived his life in a way that honored the Lord and encouraged those around him. James was a truly devoted husband, father, Papa, brother, and uncle; he faithfully loved, supported, and prayed for each member of his family. His legacy of faith, love, and quiet service will be remembered by all those who knew and loved him.
James’ memory will continue to live in the hearts of his loving wife of 33 years, Aleta Wood; daughter, Chloe Wood; son, Jeremy Wood (Ashleigh Keeran and son, Hudson); sisters, Wanda Martin (Rudy), Glenda Rakes, Betsy Gwynn (Gene); grandchildren, Kayla Wood, Nathan Wood, and Olivia Wood; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
