Jean Gilbert Poindexter

July 30, 1937 - January 23, 2025

Jean Gilbert Poindexter, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Born on July 30, 1937, in Amherst, VA, Jean was the cherished daughter of the late Charles H. Gilbert and Nannie L. Gilbert.

Jean was a devoted professional, beginning her career at Adams Motor Co. and later retiring as a secretary from Fort Hill United Methodist Church, where she also found a spiritual home as a faithful member. Her hard work and commitment were evident in every aspect of her life, from her career to her roles as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and homemaker.

Jean had a deep love for nature and enjoyed working in the garden filled with beautiful flowers. She found joy in music, exploring new places through her travels, and the simple pleasure of shopping. Her warmth, kindness, and zest for life will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Don Smith, Jr. and her second husband, John Taylor Poindexter, her beloved daughter, Lynn S. Isley, her brother, David Gilbert, and her sister-in-law, Judy Gilbert.

She leaves behind her loving daughter, Laura S. Rice (Keith), two devoted grandsons, Thomas K. Rice (Chelsie) and Matt S. Rice, and one precious great-granddaughter, Kacey Rice. She is also survived by her brother, Charles H. Gilbert, sister-in-law Wanda Gilbert, and numerous nephews who will cherish her memory.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 1:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Marc Brown. Interment will take place at Briarwood Memorial Gardens.

Jean’s legacy of love, strength, and grace will live on through her family and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
