Jean Gowen Scruggs

Jean Gowen Scruggs, 97, of Madison Heights, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

Born on July 21, 1927, in Nelson County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Thomas F. Gowen and Lola B. Gowen.

A woman of deep faith, Jean was a beloved member of St. Stephens Baptist Church, where she found great joy in serving the Lord. Jean’s love for the Lord was evident in everything she did, as she lived a life of integrity, humility, and gratitude. She was a faithful servant, always putting the needs of others first and embodying the true meaning of kindness.

Jean retired from Busy Bee Daycare, where she was a dedicated caregiver for many years. She had a special place in her heart for children and was a nurturing presence to all who knew her. Whether she was surrounded by her own children, grandchildren, or those of others, Jean’s love for children was unmistakable. She was known for her gentle spirit, her sweet smile, and her caring nature.

A true lover of family, Jean lived an honest and simple life, always treasuring the moments spent with those she loved. She was deeply thankful for the many blessings in her life and found great joy in the small, everyday things. Her family was her greatest treasure, and her devotion to them was unparalleled.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Scruggs; her son, Johnny E. Scruggs; her five siblings, Barbara Hudson, T.F. Gowen Jr., Othello G. McAlister, Eleanor G. Martin, and Phyllis G. Strickler; as well as two grandchildren, Jeanie Scruggs and Daniel Scruggs.

She is survived by her two children, Judy S. Wills and Jerry L. Scruggs (Donna); five grandchildren, Stacy Powell (D.H.), Christy West (Jeff), Troy Scruggs (Amy), Jonathan Scruggs (April), and Lisa Hill (Joe); one brother-in-law, Harry Strickler; and ten great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were cherished by her.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 10:00 am – 10:45 am at St. Stephens Baptist Church, located at 2903 Tye River Rd, Amherst, VA. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11:00 am, with Pastor Mickey Ryan officiating. Jean will be laid to rest at St. Stephens Baptist Cemetery after the service.

Jean’s love, grace, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy of kindness, love, and devotion to family will never be forgotten.
